Game 2 played 18 May against Mount @ Mount

Chargers vs. Mount Maunganui, 9:45 kick off
Venue: Blake Park, Mount Maunganui

Warm up started at 9am, the rain however started too. The field was soft and we were in for a true forwards battle. Kick off and with the rain came the Mount, they were ready and quickly turned the ball over and within 5 minutes they had scored straight through the middle, try unconverted. 0-5

Chargers kick off and the Mount side drive back playing the game at our end of the field and before long they were over again, unconverted score 0-10. This moment was a vital part of the Chargers game, get the heads up high and play the game, or drop our heads and wait for the finish! Chargers don’t drop their heads and it was game time, look out green and yellow, here come the men!

Chargers kick off, Greerton work hard to win the ball and with some strong team runs and support, Kingston breaks through to score our first points, Joel converts score 7-10.

Mount kick off and Greerton ball, we make it back into their half before losing it, forwards and backs organise their defense, great pressure from the backs on their line, Mount make a mistake and Zavaan takes the intercept and runs 40 meters to score a great try under the posts, unconverted by Joel. Score 12-10 Half time

Half time, coach talks about support and commitment to rucks, look after the ball, look after your mates and play as if the score is nil all.

Play gets underway, rain is still falling and both teams are ready for some hard rugby. The battle is on and neither side scores for some time but mount have the Chargers pinned in there 22, fantastic commitment to hold them out and Greerton get the turn over 35m off their line. Scrum, here comes the Kingston and Zavaan combo, no fries, no drink, just draw and pass and Zavaan is off breaking tackles running all the way to score a great try. Unconverted, score 17-10.

Mount come back with kick off and turning the ball over, more pressure, more defense but the mount drive and make their way to score a try with 10 minutes to go, conversion vital………. missed, unconverted Score 17-15.

With 10 minutes to go the crowd sparks up for both sides, great support from the side line for the Chargers the Greerton boys need to dig in, the mount have the ball, bring it to the 22 and camp on our try line, scrums, penalties, attack after attack they can’t get through. Turnover and Greerton get out to the 10m, turn over again and scrum 10m in our half to the Mount 2 minutes to go. Mount put a big scrum in and over push the mark, new scrum mount ball, Chargers step up big driver and tight head, ball out to the wing but we loss it and Mount retain the ball and drive it all the way to our try line. Mount player gets over the line but driven back in huge defense, again in the corner but a meter short, ball comes loose and it’s taken out of play by Adam, whistle goes fulltime, Chargers win over the Mount for first time in 6 season.

A fantastic team effort in wet conditions, great Mount team but when we had the ball we attached well, this victory came from great defense, determination and commitment. Well done Chargers, enjoy a great WIN.
